The Surgery Coordinator will work as part of the Orthopedic Team to provide compassionate care and education to our patients suffering from acute and chronic injuries and/or conditions. This is an administrative/educational role that requires collaboration with patients to assist them in navigating the pre‑surgical and post‑operative processes. The role involves daily coordination of surgery with surgical facilities, coordinating surgery preparation for patients including sending medications, PT, DME, clearances, labs, patient education, pre‑operative phone calls, and triages post‑op phone calls. The ideal candidate for this position has a clinical background as MA, LPN, or RN with a willingness and desire to be part of a fast‑paced orthopedic clinic striving for excellence.

Essential Functions

  • Schedule orthopedic surgeries
  • Follow all surgical pre and postoperative protocols
  • Maintain accurate surgical folders and protocols
  • Fax and obtain medical clearances prior to surgery
  • Receive outside documentation for patient care
  • Facilitate medication refills for patients
  • Complete prior authorization for medications
  • Run INSPECT reports as needed
  • Complete diagnostic, therapy and DME orders
  • Educate patient and family regarding preop, surgical and post‑op care
  • Manage and triage patient care concerns
  • Exercise initiative, judgement, discretion, and decision making to achieve objectives
  • Remain knowledgeable and current with HIPAA, OSHA, and other governmental regulations, while participating in the education and compliance of staff
  • Carry out work duties and responsibilities with efficiency and competency
  • Crosstrain with other positions in the office to assure seamless patient care
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent personal and telephone contact with patients, physicians, and other healthcare personnel. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. It is possible work may involve interaction with injured or sick patients.

Travel

Travel between Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute locations may be required.

Role Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Digital literacy
  • Must have reliable transportation

Preferred Experience Requirements

Experience with one or more of the following preferred: surgery scheduling, familiarity with medical coding, MOD MED. Ability to send medications, remove sutures, draw up injections preferred.

Minimum Education Requirements

High school diploma or the equivalent.

Preferred Education Requirements

Graduate from an accredited MA, LPN, RN program.

Required Skills

Minimum of (1) one‑year medical practice or comparable experience required.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, work longer than eight (8) hour shifts, and to work both day/evening shifts. Work may require hand dexterity as well as the need to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to focus.
