We are seeking to appoint a Casing and Polishing Technician to join our ever-expanding dedicated Watchmaking Workshop team. This is an important role that supports Laings’ growing service business, along with our long-term vision of investing in our business heritage and in keeping unique skills alive, by restoring superlative finishes to luxury timepieces. Assisting across 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, our position is located in the heart of Glasgow city centre.
Responsibilities
- Carry out visual diagnosis of cases and bracelets using knowledge of various materials and designs to assess limitations of refinishing.
- Preparation of cases and bracelets for polishing, including masking, taping, manipulation and cleaning.
- Sympathetic refinishing of cases and bracelets, maintaining case and bracelet profiles removing relevant marks and scratches.
- Restoring a variety of finishes; high shine, brushing, graining across a variety of materials using necessary methods.
- Careful component handling, applying protective materials post-polishing to protect work.
- Safe use of a variety of polishing equipment including variable speed polishing motor, lapping machine and sandblaster.
- Complete disassembly of modern cases with correct tool usage to maintain integrity of case.
- Reassembly of modern watch cases, replacing all necessary parts to restore case functionality.
- Water resistance testing in line with expected watch performance.
- Accurate materials ordering and controls along with an understanding of Laings Service Products.
- Clear communication of estimated works in line with company authorised products and quality criteria.
- Understanding of watch brands, models and individual accreditation levels.
- Managing work orders to ensure accuracy of updates to service order progress.
About you
- Qualification and/or proven experience as a professional polisher in a technical environment achieving a variety of finishes using relevant equipment.
- Technically minded with a proven track record of working meticulously and accurately whilst upholding high standards of quality and excellence.
- Understanding of workshop machinery and tooling along with workshop maintenance requirements.
- Sound awareness of metal characteristics and of metal refinishing limitations.
- Excellent dexterity and the ability to focus for extended periods.
- Effective time management and ability to prioritise workload.
