The Project
Join stage 2 of the Brighton 3Ts (Teaching, Trauma, and Tertiary Care) redevelopment project, a transformative initiative at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. With outdated structures now demolished, including the 195-year-old Barry Building, we're moving into the construction phase of a state-of-the-art facility, enhancing cancer care services for the future.
The Role
As Senior Environment & Carbon Advisor, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering the project's sustainability goals. Responsibilities include:
- Strategic analysis, planning, and implementation of the project's environmental and carbon requirements, risks, and opportunities.
- Embed Laing O'Rourke's environmental, carbon, and energy management systems into the project, ensuring compliance with contractual and client requirements.
- Secure necessary environmental consents by engaging with relevant regulatory bodies.
- Develop and deliver training programs on environmental, carbon, and energy-related topics.
- Provide technical advice and support in resolving environmental and carbon issues to the project team, clients, contractors, and workforce.
- Collect, analyse and report on environmental and carbon performance and data and regularly undertake inspections.
- Promote knowledge sharing by documenting and presenting key environmental and carbon learnings through case studies and presentations.
- Investigate and report environmental incidents and non-conformances and corrective actions.
- Lead the implementation of the NHS Net Zero Building Standard, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to achieve embodied carbon reduction goals.
- Champion the implementation of the business environmental and carbon strategy, driving innovation and best practice across the project.
About You
You’ll have a passion for sustainability, strong technical expertise, and a collaborative and influential approach when engaging and driving positive change within project teams. Strong time-management and organisational skills – a proactive self-starter. Ability to take a strategic view of environmental requirements and implement action plans. Proficiency in data collation (Excel) and performance reporting. Knowledge of environmental processes and assessments (e.g., BREEAM) and ISO14001/ISO50001 compliance. Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Experience in carbon measurement and management is desirable but we’re keen to support those looking to develop in this emerging field.
- A relevant degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
- Membership Institute ISEP (previously IEMA) or IES (Practitioner level or equivalent preferred).
- ISO14001 auditor qualification.
- Knowledge of RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) Standard 2nd Edition and PAS 2080.
- Experience with LCA tools (e.g., OneClick LCA).
