The Opportunity:
Laing O\’Rourke is recruiting an Electrical Engineer to work in the Technology & Innovation team. The role will balance product development and the advancement of our digital capabilities for product-led design in the construction industry.
What will the role look like?
Laing O\’Rourke has developed a product-led approach enabled by digital automation and a kit-of-parts strategy. This method is delivering strong, repeatable benefits including increased efficiency and safer construction. We are scaling our methodology to do more and go further into other construction sectors and in particular Power and Electricity Transmission.
This new role will enhance our product-led capability in construction, supporting our innovation workstream and strategic projects. It will support the exploration of, and transfer of knowledge into, key growth areas for the business. The role will also support the development of Digital Toolkits for design automation and configuration, and our decarbonisation strategy.
Examples of the activities that will be required as part of this role:
- Developing new kit of parts products in key sectors, including Power/Transmission and Nuclear.
- Engineering detailed solutions for known and future challenges in the construction industry.
- Leading research to evaluate opportunities, tackle challenges and explore new materials.
- Identifying improvements/enhancements to existing products and solutions.
- Working with project teams to deploy product-led solutions across different sectors.
- Guiding the development of design automation and configuration software.
- Being an ambassador for modern methods of construction (MMC).
- Managing innovation projects and pitching ideas and creating business cases.
- Identifying increased productivity automation opportunities.
Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) specific duties include:
- Engineering systems, products and solutions using standardisation for efficiency in offsite manufacturing and ease of on-site assembly.
- Exploring the interaction of programme, cost, and design approach throughout delivery.
- Leading the interrogation of a proposed approach and exploring feasibility for manufacture and assembly.
- Advocating for the mindset and philosophy of effective Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) compared to traditional design and build construction.
- Tracking industry development and new technology.
What skills & experience are we looking for?
- Electrical Engineering background required, preferably with experience in product design or design consultancy.
- Experience in power distribution, transmission, or product design preferred.
- Knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles and standards.
- Knowledge in structural steelwork is beneficial.
- Strong grasp of engineering, construction processes, stakeholders, and workflows.
- Experience with modelling software (preferably Solidworks); willing to learn more (training provided).
- Proficient in using simulation design tools.
- Project or Design Management experience at any scale.
- Excellent communication skills, fluent in written and spoken English.
- Enthusiasm for tackling the construction industry\’s big challenges!
Desirable skills
- Experienced in design and analysis knowledge of UK standards, Eurocodes and client requirements in a relevant domain.
- Experience with parametric design and modelling tools
- Knowledge of or experience in design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA)
- Construction site / manufacturing facility / project experience
- Professionally qualified / chartered by a recognised body in the UK.
