The Opportunity:
Laing O\’Rourke have an opportunity for a Senior Design Manager to join the team on our national Life Sciences and Healthcare portfolio. The role can be based from any of our Laing O\’Rourke offices including; Dartford, Sale, Leeds, Newcastle, St Neots, Glasgow and the factory in Worksop. A Laing O\’Rourke Senior Design Manager leads the delivery of effective design across multiple projects, or a single large scale project. They provide a focus for, and lead the pre-construction phase design processes, liaising with the client, the design team, in-house bid team and the operations team. On live projects, they implement and lead the processes that enable the design to be challenged and interrogated within a collaborative team framework, to enable risks to be reduced.
The Laing O\’Rourke Senior Design Manager is a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, which is there to ensure technical excellence, assurance and performance across all projects and opportunities from pre-project, early engagement and work winning through to detailed delivery. All of our designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise which aims to maximise and realise the potential of design to increase certainty on our projects.
What will the role look like?
- Providing a focus for and leading the pre construction phase briefing and design processes.
- Leading LOR\’s design management procedures, providing a functional link between the commercial and construction teams and the designers throughout the project life.
- Implementing the processes that enable the design to be challenged and interrogated within a collaborative team framework
- Implementing agreed processes for the production, control and distribution of design information at different project stages.
- Ensuring regular progress reporting of the design.
- Ensuring design information is thoroughly reviewed: for buildability, safety and maintainability, ‘completeness & compliance\’ and technical suitability before use.
- Assisting the Design Leader in promoting innovation in design management, methodology, processes and practices.
- Assisting the Design Leader in promoting the application and adoption of the Company\’s vision and values in all design management activities.

What skills & experience are we looking for?
- First degree in Mechanical Engineering. Other appropriate construction related qualification plus design related experience.
- Approx 10 years\’ experience. Has sector specialism as well as deep and broad experience managing the design of design – construction or building services projects. Likely to have international experience.
