Senior Electrical Design Manager – Substations

We\’re looking for a Senior Electrical Design Manager with proven experience in substation design and delivery to join our project team on the Wimbledon Asset Replacement Substation. This is a flagship scheme within our Great Grid Upgrade portfolio, supporting the UK\’s energy transition by upgrading critical infrastructure for future generations.
The role
As Senior Electrical Design Manager, you\’ll lead the design management process for a major substation replacement, working closely with clients, designers, and our operations team. You\’ll provide technical leadership, manage design risk, and ensure delivery excellence from pre-construction through to handover.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead multi-disciplinary design coordination for the Wimbledon Substation Asset Replacement project.
- Act as the technical focal point for electrical and HV systems design, ensuring compliance with client, statutory and safety requirements.
- Oversee design reviews, manage queries, and ensure risks are identified and mitigated.
- Collaborate with supply chain partners, designers, and internal teams to deliver optimised, safe, and sustainable solutions.
- Mentor and support Design Managers and Deputies within the team.
What we\’re looking for
- Chartered Engineer (or working towards) with a degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- Significant experience delivering substation projects (400kV/132kV or similar HV infrastructure).
- Strong understanding of UK regulations, design standards, and grid connection requirements.
- Excellent stakeholder management, able to collaborate across client, consultant, and contractor teams.
- A track record of leading design on complex, large-scale infrastructure schemes.
