We’re seeking a talented and driven Electrical Design Manager to join our expert team, delivering essential infrastructure for the Ministry of Defence. Based in Manchester, you’ll play a key role in a high-profile, technically ambitious programme of work — contributing to projects that matter, for clients that trust us.
At Laing O’Rourke, our Design Managers are more than just technical leads — they’re strategic thinkers, collaborators, and problem solvers. You’ll work at the heart of our integrated design and delivery approach, overseeing the production, review and distribution of design information from conception through to handover. Your focus: ensuring designs are buildable, compliant, innovative and efficient.
What You’ll Be Doing- Leading design input on multi-disciplinary projects, from early concepts through to delivery.
- Driving the performance and effectiveness of external consultant teams.
- Championing DfMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly), digital engineering, and collaborative ways of working across the supply chain.
- Ensuring compliance, technical excellence and alignment with programme, budget and client expectations.
- Driving quality across the full lifecycle of our engineering and construction solutions.
- Embedding best practice and continuous improvement across our Engineering Enterprise.
- A degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent relevant qualification).
- Around 5 years’ experience managing design through the full project lifecycle — ideally across a range of sectors and procurement routes.
- A strong understanding of integrated design delivery and managing consultant performance.
- Skills in design briefing, optimisation, compliance, information control and DfMA.
- A collaborative mindset and a passion for innovation in the built environment.
