Expanded are currently recruiting for an Earthworks Project Manager. This role is responsible for leading the commercial and technical aspects of earthworks, brownfield remediation, and enabling works projects across a diverse portfolio. The role requires deep expertise in remediation, bulk earthworks, ground improvement, waste management, and brownfield regeneration, combined with strong commercial acumen and the ability to deliver complex schemes safely, on time, and within budget. The position oversees tendering, PCSA periods, early client engagement, and the technical execution of live projects, ensuring high-quality delivery and compliance with all regulatory, health and safety, and environmental requirements.
Typical Project Portfolio:
- Large-scale brownfield regeneration schemes.
- Demolition and enabling works on complex sites.
- Former petrochemical and industrial facilities.
- Power generation and MoD sites.
- UK-wide critical infrastructure projects.
- Remediation of asbestos in soils, hydrocarbon-impacted media, and contaminated groundwater.
- Bulk earthworks, ground stabilisation, and ground improvement projects ranging from £250k to £10m+.
Key Responsibilities:
- Pre-Construction & Commercial Leadership: Lead all commercial and technical elements of pre-construction, including tenders and PCSA packages. Provide high-level reviews, feasibility assessments, and costings from early land bid through to lump-sum refinement. Prepare robust tender submissions for major remediation, earthworks, and enabling works schemes. Ensure technical compliance with specifications, CDM regulations, and relevant quality, environmental, and safety standards.
- Project Delivery: Oversee the technical delivery of bulk earthworks, ground improvement, remediation, and enabling works projects. Ensure consistent high standards of health and safety across all sites, including contaminated land and geotechnical improvement activities. Manage multiple medium- to large-scale projects concurrently, ensuring safe, timely, and cost-effective completion. Supervise installation of pile mats, working platforms, soil remediation under MMPs, and treatment of hydrocarbon-impacted soils and groundwater.
- Strategic Leadership & Business Development: Work closely with the executive board to develop and update long-term strategic plans. Support growth of core markets while expanding into emerging sectors such as housing and data centres. Build and enhance in-house capabilities, including deployment of dedicated plant and resources for complex earthworks schemes. Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and supply chain partners.
- Operational & Team Management: Provide leadership to commercial, technical, and operational teams. Ensure effective communication and collaboration across internal and external stakeholders. Maintain rigorous processes across health and safety documentation, commercial controls, technical reporting, and quality management.
Key Strengths & Competencies:
- Strong commercial awareness with proven capability in resource planning and programme management.
- Strong understanding of operational outputs, equipment selection processes, and digital plant control systems such as Machine Control, as well as telematics for optimising plant performance and productivity.
- High level of technical proficiency in complex earthworks, remediation, and geotechnical improvement.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders.
- Detailed understanding of CDM regulations, health and safety frameworks, environmental standards, and quality systems.
- Strong organisational skills able to manage fluctuating workloads and adapt to changing project demands.
- Demonstrated capability in delivering high-profile and complex projects safely, on budget, and on programme.
