Shape the Future of Healthcare Infrastructure in Scotland. Laing O'Rourke is delivering one of Scotland's most transformative healthcare projects - the Monklands Replacement Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility designed to serve communities for generations. We're looking for a Deputy Design Manager with a Mechanical Engineering background to play a pivotal role in coordinating and driving the design of this complex, multidisciplinary project. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer or early‑stage design manager who wants to expand into a broader leadership role, influence major project decisions, and contribute to the creation of a world‑class hospital.

Why This Role Matters

As Deputy Design Manager, you will sit at the heart of project delivery – working closely with architects, structural engineers, MEP consultants, specialist subcontractors, and construction delivery teams. You'll help shape and manage design solutions that are:

  • Coordinated
  • Buildable
  • Safe
  • Maintainable
  • Compliant with contract, technical, and statutory requirements

This role offers the chance to step beyond discipline‑specific engineering and gain hands‑on experience across the full design lifecycle, from early concepts through to construction and handover.

What You'll Be Doing

Design Coordination & Assurance

  • Review multidisciplinary design information for accuracy, clarity, compliance, and buildability.
  • Identify risks early and support technical problem‑solving across the project.
  • Track and manage design requirements in alignment with client and contractual expectations.

Programme & Delivery

  • Support the development of design programmes and reporting structures.
  • Coordinate deliverables and ensure progress against key project milestones.
  • Lead or contribute to design reviews, technical workshops, and stakeholder meetings.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with the Design Manager to drive design strategy.
  • Support the construction team with technical queries, quality assurance, and commissioning.
  • Mentor apprentices, trainees, and early‑career design managers.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Contribute to risk and opportunity management.
  • Ensure designs meet statutory, regulatory, and assurance requirements.
  • Maintain alignment with Laing O'Rourke's governance procedures and tools.

What You'll Bring

Qualifications (Recommended)

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Chartered or working towards chartership with a recognised professional body.

Experience

  • Experience working with design consultants and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of building systems, construction methods, and materials.
  • On‑site or delivery experience is beneficial but not essential.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse teams.

You’ll Thrive In This Role If You…

  • Enjoy solving complex technical challenges.
  • Are comfortable working across disciplines and prioritising collaborative progress.
  • Want to develop leadership capability and broaden your impact.
  • Embrace new technology, digital tools, and innovative approaches to design.
  • Care about sustainability, safety, and delivering outcomes that matter.
