Digital Engineer Location: Chesterfield substation - some travel to our project hub in Birmingham may be required. Laing O'Rourke are seeking a high calibre and experienced Digital Engineer to join our team, helping to deliver a major project framework for the National Grid. This is an exciting opportunity for a digitally driven professional with strong expertise in 3D modelling, 4D simulation, and 5D model-based quantification to play a key role in delivering innovative digital solutions on a landmark project. The role will be site based in Chesterfield, where we are constructing a new substation. You will support the deployment of digital solutions on a key national project - The Great Grid Upgrade.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Digital Team Leads in scoping digital services, planning deliverables, and managing deadlines for company-wide digital tasks.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop coordinated digital solutions that support planning, communication, and project delivery objectives.
- Translate project information into detailed and accurate 3D and 4D models, including sequencing, staging, and logistics.
- Manage and develop 3D models and visualisation environments in line with client and company requirements.
- Champion the use of 4D construction sequencing tools and animation workflows to communicate programme-critical information effectively.
- Implement model-based quantification processes and support the visualisation of 5D outputs.
- Drive the development and delivery of solutions aligned with Digital Standards and industry best practice.
- Promote innovation, continuous improvement, and best practice across Digital Engineering services.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with senior leadership teams and project stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities to improve digital delivery, efficiency, and project outcomes.
- Deliver high-quality digital outputs on time and to scope.
- Mentor and support trainees and team members in 3D modelling, 4D sequencing, 5D quantification, and visualisation workflows.
- Provide constructive feedback and development support to direct reports where applicable.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Excellent communication skills with a proactive and collaborative approach.
- Strong understanding of design, manufacturing, and construction processes and the ability to communicate these visually.
- Degree in design, construction, or engineering-related discipline, or a minimum of 5 years' relevant experience.
- Minimum 3 years' experience working with BIM or 3D-based technologies.
- Ability to train and mentor others in digital workflows and tools.
- Able to work collaboratively within a Digital Central Services Team environment.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage agreed deliverables.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel to projects, offices, and group events as required.
Desirable
- Experience with advanced visualisation and rendering platforms such as Autodesk 3DS Max, Omniverse, Chaos Vantage, Chaos V-Ray, Unreal Engine.
- Experience with coding/programming tools including Dynamo, Python, or HTML.
- Visualisation and animation tools such as Lumion or Twinmotion.
- Working knowledge of 4D planning tools such as Synchro Pro (or similar).
- Experience with model scheduling and quantification processes aligned to NRM1.
- Experience using Solibri, Trimble Connect, or Power BI.
- Recognised BIM Qualification.
