Are you ready to make a real impact on a landmark infrastructure project? We are looking for an experienced and passionate Environmental & Sustainability professional to take the lead on driving industry‑leading performance across a major project. This high‑profile role offers real influence – perfect for someone who thrives on collaboration, big‑picture thinking, and turning sustainability ambitions into reality.
You will take ownership of driving industry‑leading environmental and sustainability performance, coordinating BREEAM compliance, delivering ISO14001 and ISO50001 standards, and providing training and workshops to upskill teams. With a strong focus on environmental management (around 90%) and sustainability coordination (around 10%), this role also offers the chance to broaden your expertise across social value, whole life carbon, and wider sustainability disciplines. As the key point of contact for sustainability, you will coordinate rather than execute everything yourself – holding teams to account, managing risks, and ensuring plans are delivered. If you enjoy influencing, leading, and upskilling others, this role has your name on it.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and the Energy Management Plan aligned with ISO14001 and ISO50001.
- Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and management system requirements.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and incident investigations to maintain high standards.
- Implement energy efficiency measures and drive reduction and biodiversity initiatives.
- Manage waste and resource plans to meet legal and sustainability targets.
- Deliver training and workshops on environmental practices and energy awareness for staff and subcontractors.
- Coordinate and manage BREEAM compliance across the project team, client, and assessor by collecting and validating evidence.
- Deliver workshops and training sessions to ensure all stakeholders understand and meet BREEAM obligations.
- Serve as the single point of contact for sustainability matters, providing clear and concise communication of high‑level sustainability information to Project Leaders.
- Integrate environment, social value, and whole life carbon objectives, ensuring these are communicated clearly to Project Leaders and embedded into daily operations.
- Ensure sustainability actions and plans are completed and hold discipline tasks to account, coordinating across teams rather than executing all tasks directly.
- Effectively communicate sustainability requirements to both project leadership and the wider project team.
- Collaborate with discipline leads to ensure sustainability requirements are met.
- Lead monthly client reporting (e.g., LUNAR reporting and functional BPR), highlighting key risks and opportunities for the project.
- Attend settlement and handover meetings from a sustainability perspective and support the work winning team at tender stage.
- Complete the Sustainability Management Plan (SMP), ensuring collaboration with environment, social value, and carbon disciplines. Communicate this plan to all levels of the project team.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability, or related discipline.
- IEMA Practitioner or equivalent professional membership.
- Experience in environmental compliance and sustainability delivery.
- Knowledge of ISO14001 and ISO50001 standards.
- BREEAM Accredited Professional (AP) training and ability to lead compliance.
- Strong facilitation skills for delivering training and workshops.
- Well organised and capable of managing multiple tasks efficiently.
- Communicates clearly and adapts communication style to suit different stakeholders, ensuring mutual understanding.
- Skilled at building and maintaining positive working relationships.
