Laing O'Rourke is recruiting a Senior Civil / Structural Engineer to join our Technology & Innovation team, supporting the continued development of offsite and product-led construction. This role will focus on product and system design, digital exploration, and applying low-carbon research to real-world construction challenges. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer who is passionate about innovation, enjoys problem solving, and wants to help shape the future of industrialised construction.
In this role, you will help enhance our product-led capability in infrastructure (transport and power), while supporting the transfer of innovation into other strategic growth areas. You will collaborate with a broad range of in‑house specialists and external partners, bridging the gap between research, design and construction delivery. You will also play a key role in championing and developing digital tools that automate design and construction processes, enabling scalable and efficient offsite manufacturing solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design construction products and systems for infrastructure applications, with a focus on reinforced concrete and structural steel
- Integrate low-carbon solutions and innovative manufacturing methods into product offerings
- Develop and support design automation and configuration tools for product‑led construction and manufacturing
- Work closely with project and delivery teams to deploy product‑led solutions across multiple sectors
- Lead and contribute to research exploring new materials, technologies and construction approaches
- Act as an ambassador for industrialised and offsite construction
What We Are Looking For?
Core Skills & Experience
- Enthusiastic, self‑driven engineer with a passion for problem solving
- Strong civil and/or structural engineering design experience
- Familiarity with reinforced concrete design and structural steelwork
- Good understanding of construction processes, stakeholders and project workflows
- Experience using modelling software (preferably SolidWorks), with a willingness to extend skills through further training
- Ability to use structural analysis or simulation tools to inform design decisions
- Project management experience at any scale
- Strong communicator with high proficiency in written and spoken English
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of UK standards, Eurocodes and client requirements
- Experience with parametric design, computational modelling and/or scripting
- Experience in precast concrete or Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA)
- Construction site or project delivery experience
- Professionally qualified or chartered with a recognised UK institution
