TheOpportunity
We are looking for a structural engineer to join our growing and dynamic Precast Technical Solutions team. Precast Technical Solutions (PTS) is an integral part of the Explore Manufacturing Design Centre, established to provide end-to-end leadership and best practice in precast design and engineering throughout the full design process. This role is an opportunity to be at the forefront of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) in the UK, with teams developing and delivering innovative solutions, utilising products that we produce through our own manufacturing facility, the Centre for Excellence for Modern Construction (CEMC).
At Explore Manufacturing we produce a variety of precast concrete products, many of which require bespoke solutions. The Structural Engineer role is required to provide structural engineering design support to reduce risk and ensure ‘engineered safety\’ throughout the full life cycle of the manufactured product, and to provide structural engineering input on Tenders and Pre-Construction Service Agreement (PCSA) engagements for all DfMA projects across Building Structures, Facades and Infrastructure. The role is also required to produce permanent designs of some precast elements including associated supporting structure.
The individual will work closely with the production team to assess temporary works and lifting design requirements and develop appropriate engineering solutions, and with bid teams to assess existing designs and develop alternative, DfMA product-based designs during the tender process to enable robust pricing and identification of technical risk. Additionally, we are always seeking to reduce the environmental impact of our product sets, where the engineering team is best placed to make a difference. This will be a critical role in delivering on Laing O\’Rourke\’s target to be a net zero carbon company by 2050.
What will therole look like?
- Providing and checking precast structural designs during the life-cycle of the product (manufacture, lifting, handling, storage, transport and install).
- Reviewing project specifications to provide designs which are considerate of the structural frame requirements.
- Providing value engineering in determining the best solution for engineering problems.
- Working with others internal and external to develop products that perform structurally to meet client requirements and manufacturing constraints.
- Conceptualising how insitu schemes can be converted and broken down into precast components, and developing associated connection strategies and designs.
- Providing tender RIBA Stage 2/3 structural design assessments for cost allowances, utilising the CEMC product set.
- Taking an innovative approach in determining the best solution for engineering problems, that deliver efficiencies and savings in carbon and material.
- Understanding Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles (DFMA), ensuring appreciation for materials, processes and manufacturing constraints, and undertaking conversion designs to ensure feasibility.
What Skills and Experience are we looking for?
Essential
- Self-motivated and proactive individual capable of working as part of a team and under own initiative
- Good problem-solving skills and confidence to enforce safe designs
- Reinforced concrete design experience
- Degree-level Engineering education
- At least 2 years\’ relevant experience, ideally in a structural design engineer role
Desirable
- Structural Steel design experience
- Experience in using CAD packages, including Revit, and is keen to extend their learning in this area
- Knowledge in the use of design and analysis programs (e.g TEDDS, Scia Engineer)).
- Concrete reinforcement detailing knowledge
- Appreciation of site construction techniques and building design principles
- Understanding of precast concrete manufacture and associated assembly methods and costs
- Coding/scripting skills e.g. grasshopper / Solibri / Dynamo
Don\’t match all the criteria? We are open and always happy to hear from people with transferable skill sets and a commitment to learning.
