Engineering Tomorrow\’s Built Environment, Today

The Opportunity:

This is a rare opportunity to join Laing O\’Rourke\’s pioneering Technology & Innovation team, an in-house centre of excellence redefining how major infrastructure is conceived, designed, and delivered. You will be part of the group driving the transformation of the UK\’s built environment through digital engineering, product innovation, and modern methods of construction (MMC).

As a Building Services Product Engineer, you will apply systems thinking and technical insight to shape the future of building services delivery. This role sits at the heart of our component-led design strategy, supporting product innovation and digital enablement across key sectors including Healthcare, Science & Research, and Data Centres. Your work will contribute to solutions that streamline delivery, boost sustainability, and unlock new levels of efficiency in construction.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams from early-stage research to site deployment—translating design intent into real-world performance through clever engineering and digitally enabled workflows.

What will the role look like?

You will be central in:

  • Developing and enhancing kit-of-parts solutions for building services in strategic sectors
  • Leading and contributing to innovation projects, business cases, and R&D explorations
  • Embedding systems thinking and supporting automation within digital design toolkits
  • Acting as a champion for MMC and DfMA, working with delivery teams to scale adoption across the business

What skills & experience are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with a creative mindset, a solid engineering foundation, and the ability to work across boundaries. Ideally, you\’ll bring:

  • An engineering background—ideally in building services, product design, or design consultancy
  • Familiarity with mechanical and/or electrical systems, with an interest in new technologies and systems integration
  • Experience using modelling tools (e.g. Solidworks), and an openness to learn design automation or parametric tools
  • Strong stakeholder and project coordination skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving
  • A genuine enthusiasm for innovation and improving how the construction industry delivers

Additional strengths such as site experience, DfMA knowledge, or professional accreditation are welcome, but not essential. We are just as interested in your potential and mindset as your technical background.
