We are seeking an experienced, versatile Plant Fitter to support maintenance of specialist small-scale airfield equipment, including saw cutting, drilling, and sealant extrusion machinery. As the main point of contact, you will provide mobile support, carrying out breakdown repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections, and fault-finding. Working closely with operational teams, you will ensure equipment remains safe, compliant, reliable, minimising downtime and maintaining efficient site operations.

Responsibilities

  • Attend airfield sites to diagnose, repair, and resolve breakdowns efficiently and safely.
  • Deliver and oversee the planned maintenance schedule for the specialist equipment.
  • Complete accurate service records, inspection reports and daily work sheets on the Reflow system and compliance documentation. Manage service intervals and preventative maintenance.
  • Source, identify, and procure specialist parts and components from approved suppliers.
  • Conduct routine inspections and safety checks where required. Stripping equipment and plant in a safe manner.
  • Issue toolbox talks and basic maintenance training and advice to operational staff.
  • Manage and maintain stock levels of critical spares and consumables.
  • Support equipment commissioning, testing, and post-repair verification.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in line with H&S requirements, COSHH regulations, and relevant industry standards.
  • Provide technical advice, fault diagnosis guidance, and recommendations for equipment improvements.
  • Undertake minor fabrication works as needed and liaise with approved suppliers for larger fabrication requirements, ensuring requirements are accurately communicated.
  • Assist with equipment upgrades, modification projects, and improvement initiatives. Source suitable specialist plant and suppliers as required.
  • May be required to transport materials and equipment to and from site on an occasional basis.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and organisation of the workshop, service van, and immediate work areas.
  • May be required to supervise, mentor and upskill an apprentice/s or other staff when required.
  • Liaise with and co-ordinate the works of the external part time fitter.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience as a Plant Fitter, Mechanical Engineer, Field Service Engineer with small plant (heavy civils plant experience would not be suitable).
  • Experience working with specialist light plant & equipment (heavy civils plant experience would not be suitable).
  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work independently, often on remote or secure airfield sites.
  • Strong organisational skills and a methodical approach to record-keeping.
  • A proactive mindset with the ability to prioritise and respond to urgent operational needs.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to communicate with personnel at all levels.
  • Airfield experience would be beneficial, but training is provided.

Desirable

  • Hold supervisory or management experience within a workshop or plant environment.
  • Possess additional certifications such as LOLER, PUWER, or lifting equipment inspection training.
  • Have experience working within the aviation, defence, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of asset management systems or maintenance tracking software.
  • Be capable of leading and mentoring a small team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and safety.
