The Role
This role is a full-time, office-based position.
We are currently seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Electronics Engineer to join the R&D team to make a significant contribution to the development of the diverse product range. Working with the Group Research Director and R&D Electronics Engineers in the Sheffield head office, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day undertaking and management of a number of aspects of the current and planned scientific instrumentation development projects. In addition, there is scope for international travel and other activities within the business, including providing support to other departments such as Sales and Service in technical matters, as well as the customer base.
Responsibilities
- Execution of technical tasks in a deadline-oriented manner
- Working in partnership with product specialists to define requirements specifications for new products
- Developing and implementing new electronic hardware solutions in line with product requirements
- Taking ownership of the design and development of new electronic hardware solutions, working with other team members to manage integration, collaborate on problem-solving and provide mutual peer review
- Carrying out testing and evaluation of all new product developments to ensure robust and comprehensive hardware solutions.
- Carrying out engineering work in line with company procedures based on industry-recognised quality standards.
- Supporting in-house production by conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions to resolve manufacturing issues.
- Supporting other engineers and collaborating to create a cohesive design for development into products
- Applying proper project management processes and complete documentary records for safekeeping and traceability.

Requirements
- At least 5 years relevant industry experience of working in a research and development team
- Undergraduate degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems or equivalent
- At least 5 years’ experience designing PCBs, including schematic capture and layout (Proteus, Eagle, Altium, etc.)
- At least 5 years’ experience with hardware prototyping, electronic prototyping, bench testing and iterative design development.
- At least 5 years’ experience in component-level fault finding.
- At least 5 years’ experience in supporting production environments, troubleshooting manufacturing issues, and conducting root cause analysis to drive continuous improvement.
- Excellent communication skills and experience of working well in a multi-skilled team
- Excellent ability to prioritise tasks and manage time to meet project needs
- Knowledge of nuclear physics concepts and common instrumentation design
- Knowledge of IPC standards
- C and/or C++ programming
- Firmware development experience for embedded micro-controllers in C; STM32 and PIC preferable
- Familiarity with various communication protocols (I2C, SPI, USB, TCP/IP, UDP)
