Through on-the-job training with a one-day a week release to college, you will learn laboratory skills whilst working towards a Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Standard and a HNC in Applied Science.

As a Labcorp Apprentice you will be working to contribute to the success of the business to develop drug solutions to improve health and lives across the globe. In 2022 88% of drugs approved by the FDA were supported by work performed by Labcorp. In addition to the lab skills and qualification you will receive, we support your professional development and career exploration through program workshops, leadership speakers, employee resource group introductions, new hire panel discussions and small group ‘coffee chats’.
Department Information: The department of Histology is under the umbrella of ‘Post Life Services’ and offers a great opportunity for those specialising in more hands-on tasks. The department has several apprentices working at Levels 3, 5 and 6 which creates a supportive environment for mixing both college studies and laboratory based work. A level of dexterity and manual skill is needed to complete the manual and automated processes within Histology (on organs previously removed and fixed in Neutral Buffered Formalin by the Necropsy department). These processes are tissue trimming to sample the required organs into a tissue cassette, processing to dehydrate tissue and infiltrate with wax, embedding to orientate the organ into a specific blocking pattern, microtomy to produce a one cell thick sample of the organ on a microscope slide, staining with Haematoxylin and Eosin, and quality control within Histology to check the stained slide highlights key cellular structures for pathological analysis. Specialised staining may also be performed to aid pathology diagnosis performed by the Pathology Department.
Large diverse teams work dynamically throughout the week in a fast paced laboratory setting, with an emphasis on team work, flexibility and adaptability. High efficiency and productivity is developed and maintained through training and constructive feedback and this is balanced with a high level of quality in all aspects of the role. Training is on the job, with a dedicated training program offering both one on one sessions and larger groups in order to develop key manual and scientific skills. Our aim during the 2-year programme is to produce confident competent scientific technicians with the core skills to allow them to develop a career within the company. We then offer the option to progress to both a Level 5 or Level 6 Degree qualification or beyond to a Masters Qualification.
