Full time

Salary £57,457 - £58,462. An additional retention payment of £4000 per annum (to be reviewed in 6 months) applies on top of the salary. You would become eligible for the payment following successful completion of your 6 month probationary period and a minimum of 6 months continuous employment at the Council.

Responsibilities:

The Building Control environment is rapidly changing and evolving in a post Grenfell World. To help shape the service of the future, gain experience, and provide continuity, you will be working alongside the current Building Control Manager who will support the successful candidate. We are looking for a seasoned building control practitioner capable of taking the service forward in the future. Your task will be to develop and manage the Building Control Service in partnership with the current manager and senior colleagues.

You will need to be forward thinking, driven and creative, capable of developing and delivering the service of the future, looking for better and smarter ways to work ensuring that the service delivers on the impending regulatory requirements and outcomes of the Building Safety Act whilst maximising opportunities for income generation and ensuring that the service is the provider of choice in the ‘open market’ building control world.

Your main challenge and opportunity to shine will be to balance the competing demands of the Council’s strategic aspirations, regulatory changes, competency requirements, community concerns and environmental constraints whilst delivering a high-quality service ensuring that places are safe and meet regulatory requirements.

This role will require you to develop strong relationships with colleagues in the wider building control world, through the national Local Authority Building Control network and West Yorkshire collaboration and ensure that the service is up to date with the latest developments and requirements that will follow through the Building Safety Regulator and their new role in overseeing building control.

You will advise and direct the head of service on critical actions and implications of changes in primary legislation affecting the safety of sports grounds and safety of large outdoor events through collaboration of the safety advisory group.

Essential qualifications/skills:

  • A professional qualification in a relevant field – MRICS/CABE/IFE
  • Be registered with the building safety regulator at Class 3 /4
  • Extensive experience in Building Control management particularly in connection with major development proposals.
  • In depth and extensive knowledge in the latest Building Regulation policy, requirements, guidance, and procedures.
  • Experienced at working in a sensitive political environment.
  • Experience of major or complex development proposals; their management and how to negotiate key outcomes.
  • Extensive knowledge of Health and Safety and fire regulations.
  • Use of relevant IT systems.
  • Accepts this post is politically restricted.

Desirable qualifications/skills:

  • LABC level 6 competency in associated areas.
