Compassionate Female Carers Wanted for Exceptional Client with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). La vie en Rose are seeking dedicated, empathetic, and experienced female carers to support a highly intelligent and independent gentleman with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
Shifts Available:
- 1 x 12-hour care shift (24/7 coverage)
- 1 x 3-hour AM shift (to assist and double up with primary carer)
- 1 x 3-hour PM shift (to assist and double up with primary carer)
About the Client:
- Full mental capacity and able to direct his care
- Requires 24-hour BiPAP ventilation (no oxygen due to DMD)
- Has contractures and joint issues – all movements must be done slowly and with client’s guidance
- Enjoys engaging in charitable activities, photography, writing, and loves science and computing

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide continuous care, including assistance with daily tasks, personal care, and ensuring the client’s well-being during both day shifts (12 hours) and awake night shifts (12 hours).
- Operate and monitor the BiPAP ventilator for 24-hour respiratory support, ensuring it is functioning correctly and adjusting settings as required.
- Administer medications as prescribed, following the client’s specific routine and ensuring accurate documentation.
- Assist the client with safe mobility and transfers, adhering to guidelines for slow movements due to joint contractures and risk of subluxation.
- Provide assistance with all aspects of personal care, including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, ensuring comfort and dignity.
- Drive the client to appointments, social activities, and outings, ensuring safe travel and remaining with the client unless privacy is requested.
- Establish a trusting and consistent relationship with the client, understanding his unique needs, preferences, and care routine.
- Assist the client with engaging in hobbies such as photography, writing, and charity work, ensuring he has the opportunity to participate in activities he enjoys.
- Always respect the client’s privacy and confidentiality, and never share or read personal communications without prior permission.
- Ensure the client’s environment is safe, clean, and conducive to his needs, respecting his home and his elderly mother’s space.
- Maintain accurate records of care activities, report any changes in the client’s condition, and ensure all communication is clear and documented.
- Follow all infection control and safety protocols, including wearing a face mask if unwell or exposed to illness, to ensure the client’s respiratory health is protected.
Skills and Experience Required:
- At least 1 year of experience working with individuals with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) or similar complex care needs.
- Experience managing BIPAP ventilation, as the client requires 24-hour ventilation (no oxygen).
- Familiarity with medication administration and ensuring correct dosages and schedules are followed.
- A valid UK driver’s license with no points, as carers will need to drive the client to appointments, social activities, and outings.
Additional Skills and Qualities:
- Ability to safely assist with moving and handling the client, considering his contractures and risk of joint subluxation.
- Good written and verbal communication, including the ability to understand and communicate effectively with the client, whose voice may be quiet and difficult to understand at times.
- A compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach to care, with a clear understanding of person-centred care.
- Essential for building trust and maintaining the privacy and dignity of the client.
