Senior Java Developer

12 Month contract initially + Extensions

Based: Hybrid. Max 1 day p/w onsite in London

Rate: £Market rates p/d - (via Umbrella company)

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance cloud-native applications using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
  • Design and implement event-driven solutions using Apache Kafka to support scalable and resilient business processes.
  • Build, deploy, and support applications on AWS using containerized platforms including Docker and Kubernetes (EKS).
  • Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs to enable seamless integration across enterprise systems.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and contribute to automation and environment management.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub and modern DevOps practices.
  • Optimize application performance, availability, and scalability using monitoring and observability tools including New Relic and Bosun.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, high-quality software solutions aligned with business objectives.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Strong hands‑on experience with Java 21/25 and Spring Boot.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing microservices-based applications.
  • Hands‑on experience with Apache Kafka and event‑driven architectures.
  • Strong experience developing REST APIs and distributed systems.
  • Experience with AWS cloud services and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes (EKS).
  • Hands‑on experience with Docker and containerized application deployment.
  • Experience managing infrastructure using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices.
  • Strong knowledge of MongoDB, Mongo Atlas, PostgreSQL, and Redis.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and source control using GitHub.
  • Experience with application monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimisation using tools such as New Relic and Bosun.

Desirable skills/knowledge/experience

  • Experience working within large‑scale retail or eCommerce environments.
  • Knowledge of cloud‑native architecture patterns and distributed system design.
  • Exposure to AI‑assisted engineering tools and modern software development practices.
  • Experience with performance testing and non‑functional testing methodologies.
  • Understanding of security best practices for cloud and microservices‑based applications.
  • Experience mentoring developers and contributing to engineering standards and best practices.
  • Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, and DevOps delivery methodologies.
