A growing technology consultancy working in the defence and national security sector is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join its engineering team in Newcastle. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working with modern technologies, and building reliable software systems that operate in demanding environments. You’ll work as part of a highly capable engineering team delivering solutions that support data-heavy platforms, advanced analytics, and mission-critical systems.
The Role
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play an important role in designing, building, and delivering high-quality software solutions across a variety of defence and security projects. Responsibilities include:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining robust software systems for complex technical environments
- Working collaboratively within agile engineering teams to deliver high-quality, maintainable code
- Contributing to architecture and design decisions alongside senior engineers and technical leads
- Building and supporting data-intensive applications and platforms
- Applying best practices around testing, performance, security, and reliability
- Exploring and adopting modern technologies, tools, and engineering approaches where appropriate
- Working closely with colleagues, project teams, and clients to understand requirements and deliver effective solutions
- Contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, technical curiosity, and knowledge sharing
- Supporting project delivery across multiple engagements where required
- Some travel to client sites may be required depending on project needs.
What Makes a Strong Candidate:
We’re looking for engineers who combine solid technical foundations with curiosity and a collaborative mindset. You will likely have:
- 4+ years of professional software development experience
- Strong experience with one or more strongly typed programming languages (such as Java, C#, C++, Go, Rust, or similar)
- Experience building scalable, well-structured software systems
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, DevOps practices, or modern development pipelines
- Experience working on data-heavy systems, distributed applications, or high-performance platforms
- Strong problem-solving ability and a desire to tackle technically challenging work
- The ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, architects, and stakeholders
- A 2:1 degree or above in Computer Science or a quantitative discipline from a leading university
- Eligibility to obtain UK security clearance
