Purpose of the Role
The Fitter is responsible for carrying out essential maintenance on Mobile Maintenance Trains (MMTs) to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations. This role forms part of a graded structure, starting at a Trainee level, progressing to Maintainer, then to Fitter, and then to Technician, with increasing responsibilities and technical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the A50 and hoist.
- Perform regular maintenance and repairs.
- Troubleshoot technical issues.
- Maintain accurate technical and engineering documentation.
- Support high performance targets and ensure excellent results with minimal downtime.
- Carry out scheduled machine maintenance as per the Vehicle Maintenance Instruction (VMI) and ensure the maintenance department is informed on the status of each machine.
- Manage VMI schedules and machine repairs using the Network Rail's Fleet Asset Management System (FAMS).
- Carry out periodic audits of tools, equipment and spare parts as requested.
- Ensure maintenance paperwork is completed and submitted to the Maintenance department in a timely manner.
- Ensure machine is maintained to the required standard so that the machine is in full working condition for operational shifts.
- Communicate with the Maintenance Manager, Fleet Engineer and any other relevant persons in real time, regarding any faults and/or general condition of the machine.
- Assist Specialist/Fitters with machine repairs as required.
- Perform pre‑start safety checks and safely shut down the machine in line with the appropriate procedures.
- Adapt to operational requirements and changes within the organisation.
- Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.
Person Specification
- Essential:
- Have a Full UK Driving Licence.
- Must live near to Paddock Wood, Basingstoke or Horsham.
- Able to work weekends, bank holidays and a mixture of days and nights as part of a shift-based roster.
- Hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant mechanical or engineering background.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Windows.
- Desirable:
- Previous experience working on Mobile Maintenance Trains.
- Previous railway experience.
- Level 4 in a mechanical/engineering or relevant discipline.
