As a Customs Specialist at Kuehne+Nagel, your job is to optimise logistics to keep our global supply chains running smoothly. Your expertise makes both special and ordinary moments possible for people around the world. This role is responsible for overseeing the internal audit and governance framework of customs operations within a customs agent and freight forwarding environment. The position ensures that all customs activities are compliant with UK and international regulations and internal controls in place as well as to mitigate risk and uphold operational integrity. Additionally, the role includes delivering and supporting Customs Consultancy services, including KN Customs & Trade Compliance (C&TC) Advisory Services, to both internal and external stakeholders.
How you create impact
- Support in the development and to implement internal audit programs to assess customs compliance across operational teams in the UK and Ireland
- Conduct Post-Clearance audits, performance report and remedial actions
- Support IDD co-ordinator with the reviews on the Integrity Due Diligence programme for onboarding 3rd party Customs agents and monitor performance
- Monitor adherence to HMRC regulations, including CDS declarations, tariff classifications, valuations and Preference and Duty relief schemes
- Assist with the governance initiatives to ensure consistent application of customs procedures and policies
- Collaborate with operational teams to remediate audit findings and enhance process controls
- Create and deliver Training awareness workshops to operational teams
- Contribute to the maintenance of AEO status and support external audits and inspections
- Monitor regulatory changes and share updates with the compliance team as well as scope new consultancy engagements including drafting proposals and pricing
- Provide expert customs consultancy support, including but not limited to KN C&TC Advisory Services
- Liaise with both internal and external clients to respond to C&TC-related enquiries and provide tailored guidance
- Assist the National Customs Compliance Manager in drafting, reviewing, and updating procedures and Work Instructions related to advisory services and compliance
What we would like you to bring
- Extensive experience in customs compliance, preferably within a customs agent or freight forwarding environment
- Strong understanding of UK customs legislation, including CDS, CHIEF, and post-Brexit trade rules
- Proven track record in internal auditing, governance, or risk management
- Familiarity with AEO requirements and customs simplifications (e.g., CFSP, IPR/OPR)
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities
- Professional certifications in customs, audit, or compliance (e.g., BIFA, CILT, ICA) are highly desirable
- Ability to influence and drive change across cross-functional teams
- High attention to detail and a proactive approach to continuous improvement
