Are you an experienced Sous Chef looking for a stable, supportive kitchen environment with excellent work-life balance? We are recruiting for a fantastic opportunity within a well-established, internationally recognised hotel brand located in the heart of York. This modern hotel features over 140 bedrooms, multiple meeting and event spaces, and a busy food & beverage operation catering to both leisure and corporate guests. With a strong and calm leadership team, this is an ideal role for a Sous Chef seeking long-term stability, team culture, and the chance to work across a variety of services without the pressure of a high-end fine dining kitchen.

About Us: We are a busy, city-centre hotel operating a vibrant food offering including conferences, events, afternoon tea, and seasonal functions. With a terrace area that becomes particularly popular in the summer months, the hotel offers a dynamic yet well-organised working environment. The brigade consists of 9 chefs, led by a highly regarded and calm Head Chef, contributing to a positive atmosphere and low staff turnover. Many team members have been with the business for several years, reflecting the supportive culture and work-life balance on offer.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive Salary: £32,000 per annum
  • Service Charge: Approximately £80-£100 per month
  • Work-Life Balance: Predominantly late shifts (around 12pm starts), minimal mornings
  • Stable Team: Work within a long-standing, supportive brigade
  • Flexible Weekends: Not required to work every weekend
  • Holiday: 28 days annual leave (including bank holidays)
  • Environment: Calm, well-structured kitchen with manageable service levels
  • Accessibility: City centre location with free parking available
  • Career Stability: Ideal for chefs seeking longevity rather than constant moves

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Head Chef in the day-to-day running of the kitchen
  • Lead and manage a team of chefs across multiple service periods
  • Deliver consistent quality across lunch, dinner, events, and afternoon tea
  • Assist in overseeing conference and event catering, including seasonal functions
  • Maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen organisation
  • Support training and development of junior team members
  • Ensure smooth service during busy seasonal periods such as Easter, summer, and Christmas

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Sous Chef or strong Junior Sous Chef
  • Ideally 2-3 years experience within a similar hotel or high-volume environment
  • Proven stability and longevity within previous roles
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure in a structured kitchen
  • Passion for consistent, quality food rather than fine dining complexity
  • Must have the right to work in the UK (sponsorship not available)
