What you’ll do: We have lots of difficult design challenges to solve. The UK utilities market is complicated, outdated and process-heavy, with a lot of domain modelling to get right. Strong attention to detail is essential. We have challenging technical problems to solve, such as processing tens of millions of meter readings a day. We need the right technology in place to handle this smoothly and to feed data into a machine learning pipeline that models and predicts consumption. We may also adapt Kraken to improve other utilities like water and broadband. There is a great opportunity for disruption in the UK energy market as the landscape moves toward dis-aggregated generation, less predictability, more dynamism and smarter technology. You’ll be working for a company fighting climate change. Our generation arm is the largest investor in solar generation in the UK, and funds wind and anaerobic digestion. As a supplier, we help people use greener technology and renewable energy to move the UK toward a lower carbon future.

What team you will be working on: Be part of the team setting the global standard for prepay energy. We are on a mission to empower millions of prepay customers with a budgeting solution whilst providing retailers with the most reliable, compliant and self-serve product. Some of our energy retailers’ most vulnerable customers use prepayment meters; we are looking for someone who wants to help make a real difference to these customers.

What you’ll need: We’re looking for someone with a general interest in technology and problem-solving; someone diligent and thoughtful. It would be helpful to have experience in the following (in rough priority order):

• Python
• Django (or equivalent web framework)
• Domain modelling
• HTTP and REST APIs
• Writing robust and fault-tolerant software
• Celery and async processing
• Postgres

Plus experience in the following would be a bonus:

• AWS
• Terraform

A track record of working well in a team; it would be helpful if you can:

• Bring energy to the team and enjoy collaborating with teammates, both technical and non-technical
• Explain ideas and concepts in simple terminology to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Be open and respectful to ideas from the rest of the team and wider organisation
• Support the continuous discovery process with our product teams and our energy retailers
• Feel comfortable asking for help when you need it
