Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe! Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy. We create the technology that redefines utilities and unlocks a new energy system of the future. By optimising renewable generation, building a more intelligent grid, and empowering utilities to deliver an exceptional customer experience, our operating system is transforming the industry worldwide. It’s an incredibly exciting time to work in energy. Join us on our mission to improve the lives of ONE BILLION humans within the decade and shape a cleaner, better future for everyone.
About the team: Charging turns products (tariffs), energy usage and tax into the correct charges on every bill. This role owns Charging with a strong tax focus: how tax and exemptions are configured, when and where tax is applied (per-transaction versus per-bill-document) and how charge and tax data feeds finance reporting and ERP. You own the problem end to end. Clients should be able to configure their own tax rules, launch confidently in new markets and trust the data that flows into their ERP without carrying compliance risk themselves. You will work closely with clients but also the compliance partners and lead the Charging product area as a senior individual contributor, owning the vision and roadmap and working directly with the Charging engineering team.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Product Strategy & Vision
- Own the Charging product vision and roadmap with tax as a first-class topic.
- Set the long-term direction, map the dependencies and design for the different cases.
- Drive the shift to client self-service, so clients can set up products, charges, tax and exemptions without developer intervention.
- Reduce manual intervention and lower cost to serve for our clients.
- Own the tax calculation approach including third-party coordination and define the requirements for accruals, future cost estimation and cost-of-usage so the platform gives an accurate cost picture.
- Cross-Domain Integration & Alignment
- Understand how charging, issuance, cost calculation, ledger and ERP interact and own charging and tax as a coherent part.
- Define the tax and charge reporting requirements into finance integration.
- Lead trade-off discussions across Billing, Payments and Debt and communicating decisions clearly.
- Bring problems and requirements to engineering and leave the solution space to them, engaging the right teams early without creating bottlenecks.
- Market Expansion & Discovery
- Be the voice of the client for charging and tax to understand what each market requires.
- Make sure new tax configurations and markets are supported through the core, not one-off custom builds.
Key Success Metrics & Outcomes:
- Your success is measured by billing accuracy, the share of charging and tax changes clients can make themselves, the range of markets supported through the core and clean compliance outcomes.
- Accuracy & Operational Success
- No misbilling incidents attributable to charging or tax.
- Higher share of product, charge and tax changes made by clients without developer involvement.
- Compliance & Coverage
- Clean audit and regulation outcomes on charge and tax output and correct on-time tax reporting into ERP.
- Charging and tax are not the blocker on client upgrades.
What You'll Need:
- Highly capable individual contributor who wants to be the domain owner for charging and tax.
- 5+ years in product management, ideally in financial, billing or tax systems, owning a complex backend area end to end.
- Hands-on experience with taxation in a product or systems context: configuration, exemptions, cross-jurisdiction rules and the difference between transaction-level and document-level tax.
- Systems thinking across charging, issuance, cost calculation, ledger and ERP, reasoning about dependencies and edge cases rather than the happy path alone.
- A track record of turning regulatory and finance requirements into product without being prescriptive about the engineering implementation.
- Advanced AI fluency. You use AI hands-on to explore problems, stress-test decisions and move faster.
- Strong written communication, anchoring decisions in evidence and presenting options with tradeoffs.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Comfortable working across cultures, time zones and with regional teams.
Bonus Points:
- Experience with third-party tax integrations.
- Utilities or energy domain experience.
- Exposure to ERP or GL integration.
- Multi-market or international rollout experience.
- Accruals or cost accounting familiarity.
