The Role

  • Carry out all aspects of mechanical design via production of 3D Models, General Arrangement drawings, and Design for Manufacture output (including Assembly drawings, Fabrication drawings, Bill of Materials, and As–built drawings).
  • Work to company procedures and customer specifications.
  • Generate compliant & accurate design output into purchasing, production, and operation.
  • Produce designs that comply with product assurance limitations and fully consider all stages of the product lifecycle (including material limitations, manufacturability, installability, operability, etc.).
  • Eliminate H&S risks from designs in accordance with CDM regulations.
  • Produce Designer's Risk Assessments for designs as required by project or product, clearly identifying risks.
  • Prepare 3D models in Autodesk Inventor to meet project demand, as necessary.
  • Produce 2D drawings from 3D models for customer review/approval and internal/external manufacturing processes, in accordance with the Engineering Handbook and BS 8888.
  • Responsible for ensuring self–prepared drawings/models/documents are correct and concise prior to submission.
  • Work closely with analysis engineers to ensure designs/models/drawings are developed correctly.
  • Attend Design and/or Manufacturability reviews, driving the 3D model where appropriate, and communicating design intent to the wider project team.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase departmental design capabilities and improve efficiency.
  • Contribute to R&D activities as required.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum HND in Engineering, plus 5 years experience of industrial sheet/steel fabrications.
  • OR: Minimum Bachelor’s degree (BEng Hons) in Engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering) plus 3 years experience of industrial sheet/steel fabrications.
  • Ability to use Autodesk 3D Inventor, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Vault unaided.
  • Understanding of steel manufacturing techniques and limitations (including press brake).
  • Understanding of load paths, failure modes, and operating limits of steel structures/components.
  • Knowledge of BS 8888 for engineering drawings.
  • Ability to compile coherent Designer’s Risk Assessments.
