Get in Front of the Classroom
If you're serious about teaching, you need to know what it feels like to lead a class. As a Graduate Cover Supervisor, you'll step in when teachers are absent and ensure pupils continue with the work that has been planned for them. You'll introduce tasks, answer questions, maintain expectations and keep students engaged throughout the lesson.
You’ll quickly develop some of the most important skills required of a future teacher - presence, communication, adaptability, organisation and behaviour management. No two days will necessarily look the same. You could supervise an English lesson in the morning, support a Humanities class before lunch and oversee a Science or Maths lesson later in the day.
Why This Watford School?
This is an ambitious secondary school with high expectations for both academic achievement and student behaviour. Senior leaders understand the value that talented graduates can bring to a school and are keen to provide an environment where aspiring teachers can develop. You'll work alongside experienced educators, observe different teaching styles and gain an excellent understanding of how a successful secondary school operates. As your confidence grows, you'll have the opportunity to become an increasingly established member of the school community.
Could You Be a Future Teacher?
The school is particularly interested in graduates who are confident, resilient, personable and academically capable. You'll ideally hold a 2:1 or First-Class degree and be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in working with young people. Previous school experience is advantageous but isn't essential - the right attitude, communication skills and potential are equally important.
If you've been thinking about teaching but want to experience the reality of leading a classroom first, this could be the perfect bridge between university and teacher training. Think you have what it takes to command a classroom?
