A highly regarded specialist autism provision in East London is seeking a Post-16 Maths Teacher to join its dedicated team. The setting supports autistic young people aged 16-25 through personalised educational pathways that combine academic learning, independence skills, community engagement and preparation for employment.

The school adopts a highly individualised and therapeutic approach, recognising that every learner has unique strengths, interests and aspirations. Many students present with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), communication differences, sensory needs and associated learning difficulties. Staff work collaboratively with therapists, support staff and families to ensure pupils are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in adult life.

This role would suit a teacher who understands that Maths extends beyond qualifications and can be a powerful tool for developing independence, problem-solving, financial awareness and employability skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver highly differentiated Maths, Functional Skills and numeracy programmes to Post-16 learners.
  • Adapt teaching to meet the needs of autistic young adults with a wide range of communication, sensory and learning profiles.
  • Embed practical mathematics into real-life situations including budgeting, travel training, shopping, time management and independent living skills.
  • Support learners working towards accredited qualifications including Entry Level, Functional Skills and GCSE pathways where appropriate.
  • Deliver personalised learning programmes aligned to EHCP outcomes and Preparing for Adulthood objectives.
  • Develop students' confidence, resilience and problem-solving skills through engaging and meaningful learning experiences.
  • Create highly structured, autism-friendly learning environments that reduce anxiety and maximise engagement.
  • Utilise visual supports, clear routines and personalised communication strategies to promote learning and participation.
  • Work closely with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and specialist support staff to ensure a holistic approach to learning.
  • Support learners in developing employability skills, community participation and greater independence.
  • Contribute to annual reviews, EHCP meetings, target setting and progress reporting.
  • Build positive relationships with families and external professionals to support successful outcomes.
Person Specification
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Mathematics specialism.
  • Experience teaching secondary or Post-16 learners.
  • Strong understanding of differentiation and personalised learning.
  • Experience supporting autistic learners is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Functional Skills and/or Entry Level qualifications.
  • Understanding of Preparing for Adulthood outcomes and person-centred planning is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and relationship-building skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and improving outcomes for young people with additional needs.
