More Than Just Opening and Closing the Gates

A great Caretaker can make an enormous difference to a school.

You'll help ensure that hundreds of pupils and staff arrive each morning to a building that is safe, secure, presentable and ready for learning.

From completing minor repairs and preparing rooms to carrying out site inspections and responding quickly when something goes wrong, you'll become one of those people the school simply couldn't operate without.

What Will You Be Doing?

Your responsibilities could include:

  • Opening and securing the school site
  • Completing general repairs and maintenance
  • Basic plumbing, decorating and DIY
  • Carrying out regular site inspections
  • Reporting larger maintenance issues
  • Setting up rooms for meetings and events
  • Managing deliveries
  • Supporting contractors working on site
  • Checking security systems
  • Maintaining external areas
  • Supporting cleaning and facilities teams
  • Completing basic Health & Safety checks
  • Moving equipment and furniture
  • Responding to urgent maintenance issues
  • Helping maintain a professional school environment

Who Are We Looking For?

You could already be working as a:

School Caretaker | Site Assistant | Premises Assistant | Maintenance Operative | Handyperson | Facilities Assistant | Site Supervisor

Alternatively, you may have experience within construction, property maintenance, facilities management or another practical trade and be interested in moving into education.

You'll need to be reliable, organised and comfortable working independently.

Practical maintenance skills are important, but attitude is just as crucial.

The school wants someone who takes pride in their work, builds positive relationships with staff and is willing to turn their hand to whatever the day brings.

Why Move Into a School?

If you're coming from commercial maintenance or construction, working within education can offer something different – stability, community and the opportunity to become a valued member of one organisation.

For an ambitious Caretaker, there could also be future opportunities to progress towards Site Supervisor, Facilities Manager or Estates Manager positions.
