Kooth PLC are on a mission to use technology as a way to remove any barriers that could prevent someone accessing the mental health support that they need. At Kooth, we create a welcoming space for effective, personalised digital mental health care. Kooth's products are available to over 18 million users in the US and UK, who are able to go online and access effective therapy and wellbeing support by speaking to qualified counsellors to manage their mental health in a safe and anonymous way.

Kooth is the longest-established digital mental health provider in the UK, and became the first digital mental health company to list on the London Stock Exchange in 2020, so now is a great time to join and help us support more people towards better mental health.

We're looking for an Engineer II to join our Onboarding Squad, working on aspects of Soluna, responsible for our sign-up flows and customer management. This is a hands-on coding role, ideal for someone who loves building, wants to keep growing their craft, and is excited to help shape a product ahead of a major launch.

You'll be joining at a genuinely exciting time: the squad is gearing up for the Soluna launch in September, building out a self-serve system for commercial contracts, and playing a key part in Kooth's product-led growth strategy.

The team is one of seven squads that make up Kooth's wider engineering team, around 40 people across the UK and US, all building products that help people access the support they need. We keep things simple and collaborative:

  • Daily stand-ups to plan and share updates
  • Fortnightly retros to keep improving how we work
  • Monthly product and engineering meetings
  • Regular team socials
  • No dedicated QA — we test each other's code, not our own, so peer review and quality ownership matter here

We're also invested in your growth, with mentoring opportunities and a skills matrix to help you identify where to develop next.

Requirements

Essential

  • Hands-on software engineering experience (less than 3 years' business/professional experience, this is a great next step for someone early in their career looking to build on solid foundations)
  • Comfortable with pair programming and collaborative development
  • A genuine interest in architecture and how systems fit together
  • Strong attention to detail and a quality mindset
  • A growth mindset and enthusiasm for learning
  • Compassion for colleagues and a strong connection to Kooth's mission of making mental health support accessible to everyone

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the sign-up and onboarding flows for Soluna
  • Collaborate closely with your squad, product, design, delivery, and fellow engineers, to design and ship features that support the Soluna launch
  • Support product-led growth initiatives through your engineering work
  • Take part in peer testing to maintain code quality without a dedicated QA function
  • Participate fully in squad ceremonies: stand-ups, retros, and monthly eng/product meetings
  • Take an active role in your own development, using the skills matrix to identify growth areas and working with mentors across the team

Benefits

  • Generous Annual Leave: Enjoy 28 days of annual leave, in addition to public holidays.
  • Financial Security: Secure your financial future with our pension contributions and annual company share option awards, giving you a stake in the success of the company.
  • Health and Well-being: Prioritise your health and well-being with our comprehensive AXA Health Insurance and access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). The EAP offers 24/7 telephone mental health support and access to GP consultations, ensuring your mental and physical health are taken care of.
  • Life Assurance: Gain peace of mind knowing that you're covered with life assurance, providing up to four times your annual salary to your loved ones in the unfortunate event of your passing.
  • Flexible Working: Embrace the flexibility of remote working, allowing you to create a work-life balance that suits your needs and maximises your productivity.
  • Lifestyle Benefits: Participate in the Cycle to Work Scheme, promoting a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle, and take advantage of our Incapacity Income Protection to safeguard your financial stability in case of unforeseen circumstances.

At Kooth, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace that values and embraces the unique contributions of every individual. We believe in equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation.

Our dedication to creating a fair and unbiased environment is reflected in all aspects of our recruitment, hiring, and employment practices. We strive to provide a work environment that is free from discrimination, where every employee is treated with respect and dignity.

Request for Reasonable Adjustments: We are dedicated to providing reasonable adjustments to applicants and employees with disabilities or individuals who require accommodations to participate in the application process, interviews, or job-related tasks. If you require any reasonable adjustments to ensure your equal participation in our recruitment process, please inform our Human Resources team. Your openness will allow us to work together to provide appropriate accommodations and ensure a fair and accessible application and employment experience for everyone.

How to prepare for a job interview at Kooth

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Kooth uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
