This position is responsible for the design, specification and testing approval of marine electrical equipment, which is produced by Kongsberg Maritime for naval customers. Duties will include the production of detailed technical specifications, drawings and test procedures for electrical/control systems, in accordance with contract specifications and company procedures.
Key Accountabilities
- Prepare electrical schematics and block cable diagrams using 2D CAD systems, as well as specialist electrical design software (e.g., Auto-CAD Electrical, EPLAN, WSCAD etc.).
- Prepare and maintain technical specifications, commissioning and system test procedures for marine electrical equipment.
- Provide technical support to internal and external customers as required.
- Assist in the review, co‑ordination and approval of technical documentation received from suppliers and customers (particularly with respect to motors, variable speed drives and the design/layout of control panels and operator control stations).
- Provide technical support to tender activities including estimating, specification development and bid compliance review.
- Carry out electrical calculations associated with equipment sizing, harmonic emissions and arc flash electrical safety assessments.
- Review configuration of motor variable speed drive control systems.
- Identify and develop R&D and Continuous Improvement opportunities.
- Be self‑motivated, prepared to use their own initiative and able to work independently, or work effectively as part of a multidisciplined team.
- Investigate Product Safety and Technical problems using structured problem‑solving techniques.
- Manage supplier interfaces and provide technical assistance/test result approval to suppliers.
- Other reasonable technical tasks as deemed appropriate to meet the needs of the business.
Key Experiences and Qualifications
- B.Eng./B.Sc. in either Electrical Engineering/Control Engineering, or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
- Competent user of a recognised electrical CAD package (AutoCAD, EPLAN, etc.) in the production of electrical drawings and schematics.
- Creation of control panel layout drawings and Engineering Bills of Materials.
- Good understanding of fundamental electrical and mechanical principles, with experience of practical engineering applications intended for use in a marine environment, or related industries.
- Experience of working in a highly regulated industry.
- Engineering experience relevant to this role.
- Proven track record in technical delivery of projects to quality, cost and schedule.
- Competent user of MS Office suite of programmes (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power-point etc.).
- Experience of working closely with suppliers, customers and field service teams.
- Ability to build relationships that bring together a broad range of talents, experience and perspectives thus promoting the "One Team" approach.
- Acts in a professional and courteous manner to our colleagues and Customers at all times.
- Comply with the company's QHS&E policies and procedures.
- Actively participate in Business improvement activities.
Functional/Technical Competencies and Levels
- Knowledge of AC induction motor / PM motor control systems and variable speed drive technologies.
- Knowledge of EMC and harmonic emission control practices.
- Knowledge of design verification and validation processes to ensure equipment complies with customer requirements.
- Basic knowledge of electrical equipment reliability and safety control mechanisms and how these are verified using FMECA, HAZOP and ARM analysis tools.
- Operation of 2D CAD systems.
- Knowledge of the engineering change/version control process.
