We are seeking a skilled and innovative Controls Engineer to join our multidisciplined engineering team. In this role, you will undertake design, development and support of electrical/control systems for marine applications (primarily ship fin stabiliser and steering systems). This will include all aspects of product lifecycle engineering from requirement capture to end of life. The work covers the development of new designs as well as support for legacy systems.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in PLC systems and a proven track record in developing precise documentation that meets company, and where necessary, industry standards.
The role will require occasional travel to support commissioning, sea trials or fault diagnosis.
Key Responsibilities
- Review of customer technical requirements.
- Create and maintain the following in support the electrical/controls hardware and software:
- drawings
- specifications
- engineering bill of materials
- test procedures
- operation and maintenance manuals
- project technical documentation
- Program and configure Siemens PLCs to meet project requirements.
- Development and testing of new designs and prototypes.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in design, programming, and commissioning stages.
- Conduct hazard/risk assessments, and system testing to ensure reliability and compliance with standards.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical and project engineers, to ensure seamless integration of control systems.
- Provide technical support to internal and external customers as required.
- Completion of tasks within the agreed time and to the required quality.
- Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies in control systems and automation.
- Compliance with the company’s QHS&E and Business Management policies and procedures as applicable.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related field (equivalent work experience also considered).
- Proficiency in Siemens PLC programming and configuration.
- Proven experience in creating specifications, electrical drawings, and wiring diagrams.
- Working knowledge of electrical systems, circuit diagrams and fault finding.
- Proficiency in CAD tools such as AutoCAD Electrical or similar.
- Familiarity with relevant standards (e.g., IEC, UL, ISO) and safety protocols.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated with excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Experience with motion control systems and drives.
- Familiarity with hydro-mechanical systems.
- Experience with industrial networking protocols (e.g., PROFIBUS, MODBUS).
- Experience of creating technical documentation for Naval projects.
- Knowledge of marine systems and regulations.
- Knowledge of environmental test requirements.
