The project leads, inside the model-making team

The studio is a boutique London industrial design practice, set up by designers from some of the most respected names in the business, known for products built to last. The work spans consumer technology and audio, medical devices and healthcare, and workplace and lifestyle design, from speakers and headphones to medical devices and furniture. Physical prototyping sits at the heart of how they work, and nearly every project passes through their in-house workshop.

The role

You will work at the bench alongside the studio’s model makers, taking real work off a team that is at full stretch. This is a making role, not a design one. You will produce handmade models, mechanical rigs and final-quality presentation models across a range of live projects, using hand tools, 3D printing and CNC to bring prototypes to life. You will make parts that fit together cleanly and accurately into larger assemblies, to a high standard of finish, and turn changes around at pace as designs evolve.

If you love the craft of making and want a varied mix of real products to build, in a studio that treats prototyping as central rather than an afterthought, there is a lot here to get stuck into.

What you’ll need

  • Genuine model-making skill, with a strong eye for detail and finish, and a portfolio or physical examples of your work you can show us.
  • The ability to make parts that fit together cleanly and accurately into larger assemblies, to a high standard of finish.
  • Confidence across hand tools, 3D printing and CNC, with the judgement to pick the right method for each part and job.
  • The ability to iterate quickly and work at studio pace, keeping quality high as briefs change day to day.

The details

  • On-site at the London studio
  • Genuine potential to extend to around six months
  • Working alongside an established model-making team

Benefits include

  • A full workshop, with hand tools, 3D printing and CNC
  • Datron CNC on site, a real plus if you have used one
  • A varied mix of live consumer, medical and furniture work

What it isn’t

Two things to be straight about. This is a making role, not a design one. You will not be asked to design products, only to make them, and make them well, so it suits a maker who takes pride in the craft rather than someone wanting to move into design. It is also a contract, on-site in London five days a week, two to three months to begin with. The chance to extend to six months is genuine, but this is not a permanent job and there is no team to manage.
