Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented hands-on R&D Laboratory Chemist to support our growing R&D team in Cambridge.
This role is particularly suited to a chemist with a strong background in organic synthetic chemistry , who enjoys practical laboratory work and is highly competent at executing synthetic procedures, troubleshooting experiments, and producing high-quality materials reproducibly.
Working directly under the guidance of our Senior Synthetic Chemist, you will carry out the day-to-day synthetic and analytical lab work that keeps our research moving, allowing the senior R&D team to focus on the design and development of new materials and technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute organic synthesis according to established procedures, with a strong focus on reproducibility, quality, and efficiency.
- Perform routine and multi-step synthesis of electrolyte materials and their precursors.
- Carry out reaction work-up, extraction, purification, crystallization, and other standard synthetic chemistry techniques.
- Optimise established synthetic procedures where appropriate to improve yield, purity, reproducibility, cost, or pipeline efficiency.
- Scale synthetic procedures from milligram to gram scale and support further scale-up where required.
- Prepare and purify materials for downstream testing.
- Characterise synthesised compounds using techniques such as NMR, LC-MS, GC-MS, UV-vis, and other relevant analytical methods.
- Maintain accurate and detailed experimental records, including reaction conditions, yields, purification procedures, analytical data, and observations.
- Identify and troubleshoot failed or inconsistent reactions and communicate findings clearly to the R&D team.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, chemicals, and consumables and help ensure the laboratory operates efficiently.
- Follow established procedures for laboratory safety, chemical handling, waste disposal, and good laboratory practice.
- Support the development and improvement of standard operating procedures and experimental workflows.
- Work closely with the Senior Synthetic Chemist to prioritise synthetic work according to the needs of the broader R&D programme.
- Grow into broader responsibilities as the company scales, taking on greater ownership as our lab and pipeline expand.
Requirements
- MSc in Chemistry (or equivalent practical laboratory experience, no Ph D required).
- Minimum of 2 years' hands-on experience in organic synthesis, gained through academic, industrial, or research lab work.
- Familiarity with basic characterisation methods (NMR, TLC, GC/HPLC).
- Prior experience working with functional organic materials and/or redox-active compounds is a plus.
- Comfortable following detailed written protocols precisely and consistently.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly for repetitive or multi-step procedures.
- Basic proficiency with lab software for data recording is a plus; no programming experience required.
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work well as part of a small team.
- Willingness to learn and take direction, with an interest in growing your knowledge and skills in synthetic chemistry and organic electrolytes over time.
