KO2 is working with a highly innovative manufacturing organisation in Newtownabbey, looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team. This is a key technical role, taking ownership of market-leading sensor product development from concept through to production launch, with exposure to customers across a global footprint. You’ll design and develop a range of advanced sensor products, working cross-functionally within an international engineering team. It's a hands-on role combining CAD design, supplier engagement, customer interaction, and manufacturing optimisation — ensuring delivery against customer specifications, quality standards, and project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead product development including CAD design, prototyping, validation testing, and production launch
  • Provide technical support to customers throughout the product lifecycle
  • Engage directly with customers to define specifications and agree project schedules
  • Lead engagement with suppliers, defining technical requirements and driving delivery and quality performance
  • Work cross-functionally to optimise designs for manufacturing, assembly, and cost efficiency
  • Lead engineering validation activities with test labs and production lines
  • Support change management initiatives across existing products globally

What You'll Need

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 5+ years' experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong 3D CAD experience and 2D drawing preparation
  • Initiative, strong teamwork, research capability, and problem-solving skills

Nice to Have

  • Automotive industry experience and associated qualification processes
  • SolidWorks, CATIA, and/or NX experience
  • Strong knowledge of engineering tolerances and GD&T
  • Design for manufacturing experience (plastic moulding, metal forming, stamping, casting, forging)
  • Knowledge of DFMEA / Design for Six Sigma
  • Understanding of sensor-related electronics, behaviour, and mechanical failure modes
