KO2 is delighted to be working with a long-established and respected instrumentation manufacturer based in Sowerby Bridge, who design and develop devices used to enable protection in the workplace. As part of a wider international group with a global customer base spanning multiple industries, this is a business that combines the stability of decades of engineering heritage with the energy of continued investment in new product development.
They are now looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their multi-disciplined engineering team, working alongside production engineers and product designers to bring new instruments from concept through to full production. Reporting to the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll take ownership of mechanical design tasks across the new product development lifecycle, from initial concept and feasibility studies through to design release into mainstream production. This is a hands-on design role with real influence over how new instruments perform, look, and function in the field.
Your day-to-day will include:
- Designing new mechanical instruments and components in 3D CAD, working to the company's established design guidelines and brand standards
- Producing full design documentation to support production handover, including component drawings, assembly drawings, SAT files, BOMs, and exploded views
- Identifying and specifying appropriate testing methods to validate new designs to and beyond their intended operating limits, ensuring robustness in real-world use
- Investigating and resolving design weaknesses identified during prototyping, with a focus on manufacturability and return on prototype build costs
- Researching and introducing new materials, technologies, and manufacturing processes to keep designs at the leading edge of the market
- Raising and progressing Engineering Change Notes (ECNs) in a timely manner to support ongoing product improvement
- Contributing to project plans and tracking design work against the Master Development Plan to ensure key milestones and launch dates are hit
- Carrying out cost estimates and feasibility assessments for new product concepts and ongoing projects
- Ensuring design output meets the full design brief, including target works costs
- Completing P2P (procure-to-pay) tasks accurately and on time to support prototype and production sourcing
- Following quality procedures and Health & Safety requirements throughout the design process, including carrying out risk assessments where relevant to your area of work
About You:
- Solid experience in a mechanical engineering discipline, ideally gained within a manufacturing environment
- Confident user of 3D CAD software; experience with Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Vault would be a strong advantage
- Educated to a minimum of HND level in a science, engineering, or mathematics-based subject
- A practical, detail-oriented approach with the ability to balance creative design thinking against manufacturing and cost constraints
- Comfortable working as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplined team and communicating design decisions clearly to colleagues across functions
What's on Offer:
- Salary: £33,000 - £35,000 per annum, depending on experience
- Hours: 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with an early finish at 12:30pm every Friday
- Location: Sowerby Bridge
- A genuinely collaborative working environment within an established, well-regarded engineering business
- The opportunity to work on instruments that are exported and used by customers around the world
- Real scope to influence product design, not just execute against a fixed spec
If you're a mechanical design engineer looking for a role with variety, technical depth, and a clear line of sight from concept to finished product, we'd love to hear from you. Apply now or contact KO2 Embedded Recruitment Solutions for a confidential conversation about the role.
