Electronics Engineer – Embedded Hardware

Location: Newcastle

Salary: Up to £50,000

KO2 is recruiting for an established technology business that designs and manufactures market-leading electronics equipment. Its R&D team is expanding, and it needs an Electronics Engineer to design embedded electronic systems for new products and to support its existing range.

The role

This is a hands‑on, hardware‑focused design role with real ownership. You’ll lead your own design workstream from product specification to delivery and work across the whole development lifecycle. That means creating new products as well as maintaining current and legacy ones.

The team works in an agile way, so it can respond quickly when business priorities or market needs change. You’ll be expected to deliver on time, on budget and to specification, and to back your recommendations with test data and sound risk assessment.

You’ll work closely with stakeholders inside and outside the business. You’ll also research emerging technologies and assess where they could fit into future products, which gives you plenty of scope to build your skills as the company grows.

Key responsibilities

  • Design electronic systems and firmware that meet legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Own a design workstream in line with the product specification
  • Gather requirements from business stakeholders
  • Produce project plans and detailed design drawings
  • Work with other engineering disciplines on product quality, including DFM, DFT and FMEA
  • Design with cost and efficiency in mind
  • Lead product approvals, design validation and EMC compliance
  • Analyse test results, assess risk and make clear recommendations
  • Present technical findings to colleagues and stakeholders
  • Support current and legacy products
  • Research emerging technologies and evaluate their potential

What you’ll need

  • An honours degree in Electronic Engineering or a related subject
  • At least 3 years’ proven experience in electronics or firmware development
  • Hands‑on experience with schematic capture, PCB design, CAD tools and compilers
  • A good understanding of EMC compliance, design validation and product approvals
  • Strong analytical skills and the confidence to present findings and recommendations
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach

What’s on offer

  • Salary of up to £50,000
  • Ownership of your own design workstream
  • Opportunities to develop your skills and work with new technologies
  • A place in a collaborative R&D team within an established, growing business
