The Kirkwood Hospice Clinical Services is seeking a Specialist Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner. This is a full-time, permanent position with 37.5 hours per week (over 7 days). The salary is T2, Band C. Closing date for applications is 8th July 2026.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical leadership and act as a role model to the nursing team by delivering high-quality care as an expert practitioner.
  • Set, monitor and continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care using benchmarks.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Supervise and maintain accurate records in accordance with NMC guidance and auditing standards.
  • Ensure that all nursing staff follow current safeguarding practices including MCA and best interest practice and decision making.
  • Support and inspire all members of the Multidisciplinary team, ensuring development of advanced/specialist palliative knowledge and competent professional practice.
  • Work collaboratively with the Multidisciplinary team, promoting a leadership approach to empower shared accountability for clinical decisions.
  • Engage and involve patients, families, and carers, encouraging a co-design approach to service development.
  • Ensure the safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies.
  • Promote evidence-based practice wherever possible.
  • Work with the Matron to ensure clinical governance processes encompass measures to ensure quality of care.
  • Support the implementation of benchmarking.
  • Prioritise workload within agreed objectives and decide when to refer to others as appropriate.
  • Act in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery code of conduct.
  • Act on behalf of the Specialist Palliative Care Team Leader to ensure a consistent approach.
  • Support all aspects of practice when senior nurses are absent.
  • Hold a specialist palliative care portfolio (e.g., Frailty, Admission Avoidance, Vulnerable adults, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion).
  • Ensure all staff have an individual performance development plan and maintain mandatory training requirements.
  • Ensure implementation of the Hospice’s Study Leave policy and the induction and development of staff.
  • Promote a positive learning environment within the clinical area.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records regarding staff education and attendance management.
  • Actively participate in the palliative care education programme provided by the hospice.
  • Provide leadership to the clinical team and develop new roles/ways of working.
  • Delegate and empower staff.
  • Support the nursing team, including recruitment, performance management, and workforce planning.
  • Supervise staff rostering, ensuring adequate skill mix in the absence of the Team Manager.
  • Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, and significant events, ensuring effective management and sharing of learning.
  • Work with Matron to promote the development of all staff.
  • Deliver an effective quality service and deputise for Team Manager/Matron in their absence.
  • Monitor and evaluate through clinical audit the standard of care provided by the Palliative Care team.

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • Advanced communication skills
  • Proven teaching skills
  • Excellent organisation, planning, and interpersonal skills
  • Full UK driving licence, with access to a personal vehicle for work purposes
