Do you have a strong interest and enthusiasm for archaeology and the wider historic environment? An opportunity has arisen for a Historic Environment Record (HER) Assistant to support the Archaeology Service in maintaining and enhancing the HER, working under the guidance of the HER Officer. This is a part-time role of 30 hours until March 2028.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The Durham County Council Archaeology Service provides specialist archaeological advice to Durham County Council and, through a Service Level Agreement, to Darlington Borough Council. The service advises on development and land-use proposals, supported by the Historic Environment Record (HER), which the team hosts and manages. You will update and improve records within the bespoke HER database and Geographic Information System (GIS), creating new records and enhancing existing ones. The role covers all aspects of the HER, drawing on a wide range of sources, periods, and site types, with a particular focus on updating and enhancing Local List information.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

  • Degree in Archaeology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Basic understanding of Historic Environment Record (HER) standards
  • Understanding of database and digital mapping (GIS) systems
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to think analytically and solve problems
