We’re looking for a Principal Enforcement Officer to take a strategic and operational lead in delivering a proactive, customer-focused planning enforcement service within one of England’s largest unitary authorities. Working within the Planning Service, you’ll play a vital role in protecting and enhancing the natural and built environment while supporting sustainable development and high-quality places to live and work.

In this senior role, you will lead complex investigations, guide a team of professional officers and act as a trusted expert across the organisation and with external partners. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading on complex and high-profile planning enforcement cases and managing a varied caseload
  • Providing technical advice, supervision and support to enforcement staff
  • Preparing and presenting evidence at appeals, hearings, public inquiries and court proceedings
  • Working closely with legal services, elected Members and local communities
  • Driving service performance, continuous improvement and customer-focused outcomes

  • Strong knowledge of planning legislation and significant experience in complex enforcement work
  • Proven ability to lead, organise and deliver results under pressure
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
