The Revenues service forms part of the larger customer focused Customer, Revenues & Welfare and Benefits service. The Revenues service has a clear purpose to deliver the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax due to the local authority to enable it to deliver services to residents.

As a Revenues Officer you will assist in maximising the revenue generated from the accurate billing and collection of Council Tax and Business Rates. You would be expected to engage with customers and service users on a regular basis, understand and correctly interpret policies, procedures and legislation and be able to identify the needs/requirements of customers which could be of a sensitive or complex nature.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Reporting directly to a Revenues Team Leader you will provide a full enquiry service to its customers, specialising in one of three service areas: recovery, council tax or business rates and valuation.
  • Effectively manage customer enquiries, which could be face to face, over the telephone or electronically.
  • Maintain and complete accurate records about customers to allow accurate billing and collection of charges.
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of customers and challenge information provided when appropriate in a professional manner.
  • Manage your individual workload, ensuring key performance indicators & service targets regarding customer service, accuracy and collection rates are met.
  • Assist with the discovery of new properties and changes to existing hereditaments to accurately maintain the Council Tax and Non-Domestic Rate lists.

What you will bring:

  • Strong customer service experience, with the ability to have difficult conversations and manage customer complaints professionally and appropriately.
  • Excellent communication skills in all areas, able to remain firm yet empathetic recognising and understanding the feelings and concerns of others.
  • Highly motivated and not easily discouraged, working within a pressured environment.
  • A basic knowledge of Council Tax and Business Rates and the role of the Valuation Office.
  • The ability to understand legislation and guidance, with a commitment to personal learning.
  • To be able to plan, prioritise and organise your workload to meet the needs of the team and ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Good computer literacy skills.
