Durham Johnston Comprehensive School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, reliable and trustworthy Driver to join our dedicated and supportive team.

As an experienced driver, you will play an important role in supporting the outstanding teaching and learning that takes place across our thriving and successful school. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and is committed to helping ensure their safety, wellbeing and inclusion.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have a genuine passion for supporting children and young people, including those with additional needs.

The Role

You will be responsible for driving school vehicles safely and responsibly, ensuring the comfort, welfare and security of pupils and staff at all times. Journeys may include:

  • Transporting pupils between home and school at the beginning and end of the school day.
  • Supporting educational visits and activities within the local area.

Assisting pupils when embarking and disembarking vehicles safely.
Ensuring the correct use of seatbelts, child seats and other safety equipment.
Completing vehicle safety checks and maintaining accurate records.
Upholding the highest standards of safeguarding, professionalism and care.

What We Are Looking For

The successful candidate will:

  • Be an experienced and responsible driver with a strong safety record.
  • Demonstrate reliability, trustworthiness and excellent timekeeping.
  • Have a positive and caring approach when working with children and young people.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with pupils, parents and colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate records and follow procedures carefully.
  • Share our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

If you are looking for a fulfilling role within a welcoming school community and would like to make a real difference to the lives of our students, we would love to hear from you.

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

Standard term time only pay is calculated on the basis of the following:

  • Number of ‘teaching’ weeks – 38 weeks; plus
  • Public (bank) holidays – 1.6 weeks (8 days); plus
  • Individual leave entitlement – 5.4 weeks (27 days) or 6.4 weeks (32 days)

Individual leave entitlement is calculated on the length of continuous service. Employees with less than 5 years’ service will receive 27 days annual leave. Employees with more than 5 years’ service will receive 32 days annual leave. For example:

Calculation for employees with less than 5 years’ service:
38 weeks (term time) + 27 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 45 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments

Calculation for employees with more than 5 years’ service:
38 weeks (term time) + 32 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 46 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and, if successful, you will need to apply for an enhanced DBS disclosure.

As a disability confident employer, we are committed to employing disabled people and people with health conditions making reasonable adjustments to support disabled applicants when required.

Closing date for applications is Friday 14th August 09.00am
