From refuse collection and street cleansing vehicles to specialist plant and equipment, our fleet enables frontline teams to make a real difference every day. We’re looking for an experienced, forward-thinking Fleet and Workshop Manager (Transport Manager) to lead our fleet operations and workshop services, ensuring our vehicles, equipment and people operate safely, efficiently and in full legal compliance. What you’ll be doing
- Leading and managing the Council’s fleet operations and workshop services.
- Acting as the nominated Transport Manager and holder of the Council’s Standard National Operator’s Licence.
- Developing and delivering fleet replacement programmes and procurement plans that achieve best value.
- Providing technical leadership and support on vehicle specification, fleet engineering and specialist equipment.
- Ensuring the Council maintains a safe, legally compliant and efficient heavy goods vehicle operation.
- Managing workshop performance, health and safety, inspections, maintenance scheduling and vehicle compliance.
- Supporting frontline Environmental Services teams through effective fleet planning and operational support.
- Working collaboratively with partners, suppliers and contractors to improve services and deliver successful projects.
About you
We’re looking for someone who can bring a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills and operational experience. You will have:
- Experience managing a mixed vehicle workshop and leading teams to deliver a safe and effective fleet operation.
- Significant fleet management experience, ideally within waste management, environmental services or a similar operational environment.
- Experience managing a legally compliant HGV fleet and maintaining high safety standards.
- Strong leadership, communication and people management skills.
- The ability to analyse performance data, manage budgets and drive continuous improvement.
- Experience of procurement, contract management and negotiating best value outcomes.
- A customer-focused approach and commitment to delivering excellent services.
- A Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and the ability to act as the Council’s nominated Transport Manager.
