This role is an opportunity to take the next step in your highways career while playing a key role in maintaining a safe and efficient network across Salford.

You will support the delivery of a high-quality highways service by leading and developing a team of inspectors, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations and contributing to the effective management of the highway network.

You will play an important part in protecting the travelling public, supporting the delivery of maintenance programmes, and ensuring the council meets its duties under current legislation and best practice guidance.

Your role

You will support the Highway Safety Inspections Manager in delivering an efficient and effective inspection service. We want you to:

  • Supervise and support a team of Highway Inspectors, including performance management, mentoring and development.
  • Undertake audit and quality assurance of completed safety inspections to ensure compliance with standards and policies.
  • Plan and maintain safety inspection routes to ensure they are accurate, optimised and aligned with statutory requirements.
  • Carry out detailed inspections of the highway network, identifying defects, assessing risk and determining appropriate remedial actions.
  • Issue and manage works orders, ensuring repairs are completed safely, on time and to the required standard.
  • Monitor and review performance data to support service improvement and delivery of key targets.
  • Respond to enquiries from members, the public and internal teams, ensuring a high standard of customer service.
  • Support the investigation of insurance claims, including providing reports and attending court where required.
  • Liaise with contractors, utilities and stakeholders to support effective delivery of works.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation, CDM Regulations and other relevant standards.
  • Deputise for the Highway Safety Inspections Manager where required.

Your profile

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in highways inspection, maintenance or asset management.
  • Strong knowledge of highways legislation, standards and codes of practice.
  • Proven experience of supervising staff and supporting team performance.
  • Ability to assess defects and determine appropriate and cost-effective solutions.
  • Experience of working with contractors and overseeing works on site.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Experience of handling enquiries, complaints and insurance claims.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Full UK driving licence.
