Our employees are at the very heart of the services we provide to the community. We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Transport Workshops Manager to join our Transport Services team. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for managing the effective operation of the Council’s vehicle maintenance workshops, ensuring all assets are maintained to the highest standards of safety, compliance and operational effectiveness.

You will lead the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance across multiple sites, ensuring full compliance with DVSA requirements, Operator’s Licence undertakings, and all relevant transport and health and safety legislation. Reporting to the Fleet and Transport Manager, you will oversee Workshop Team Leaders, Vehicle and Plant Technicians, and support staff to ensure a professional, efficient and compliant service that supports frontline Council operations.

As the Council’s subject matter expert for workshop operations, you will also oversee maintenance programmes, MOT and testing activities, management of budgets, contracts and performance. You will play a key role in monitoring compliance systems such as the Operator Compliance Risk Score and vehicle maintenance scheduler, supporting continuous improvement and responding to evolving legislative and technological changes within the transport sector.

As part of the Transport Services management team, you will also participate in vehicle and associated services procurement exercises. This role is based across our workshop sites, providing operational leadership and technical expertise to ensure that all fleet maintenance activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with statutory requirements.

We are looking for an individual who has:

  • Strong knowledge of transport legislation, including DVSA requirements, MOT testing, Operator’s Licence undertakings and health & safety regulations.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage and develop teams, ensuring high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in procurement, contract management and budget control within an operational workshop setting.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and report‑writing skills.
  • A recognised Level 3 qualification in vehicle maintenance (or equivalent) with significant post‑qualification experience.
  • A Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Road Haulage (National or International) – this is an essential requirement for the role.
