At Kirklees College we are always looking for new talent and welcome applications from all sectors. Whether in a teaching & learning role or in one of our specialised Business Support functions, you’ll be involved in nurturing and developing the next generation of construction workers. We’re already a successful college, but we’re continually striving to be better and do better — be part of our story!

In the role of Pastoral Mentor, you’ll work predominately at our Pioneer Higher Skills Centre providing 1:1 and small-group coaching to support our Hair and Beauty students’ personal development, wellbeing, behaviour, and progression. You will play a vital role in our team, removing barriers to learning and ensuring students feel safe, supported and able to succeed.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering 1:1 reviews, targeted interventions and pastoral coaching.
  • Supporting students identified as “at risk”, helping them overcome personal, social and academic barriers.
  • Acting as a lead contact for safeguarding disclosures for a defined caseload, maintaining accurate records and coordinating follow-up support.
  • Supporting attendance and punctuality monitoring, addressing issues promptly.
  • Facilitating restorative practice interventions.
  • Working collaboratively with curriculum teams, SEND, Safeguarding, Work Placement Officers and other internal services.
  • Providing enrichment activities and contributing to wider college events.

Ideally, you’ll have:

  • A Level 3 qualification such as BTEC, NVQ or A Level, plus Level 2 English and Maths (or equivalent ability).
  • Experience of working with “hard to reach” 14–19 year olds in an educational environment.
  • Strong coaching, communication and organisational skills.
  • The ability to engage, motivate and support learners with a wide range of needs.
  • An understanding of safeguarding, wellbeing and current issues affecting FE students.

It’s important that you’re able to engage confidently with young people, support their progression, and demonstrate our College values of Kindness, Unity and Excellence in everything you do. Due to the nature of our work, it’s essential you are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

We believe learning is not just for our students — it’s an important part of working here too. Staff development opportunities include mentoring, funded qualifications and leadership development. You’ll also have access to a range of benefits including an employee assistance programme, retail and leisure discounts, and reduced Metro travel.

We want people who believe in the value of education, and who can contribute to our culture of supporting and challenging one another.

Staff who start mid Academic year will have their initial salary payments calculated based on actual weeks worked and the number of pay dates between the beginning of employment and the end of the current academic year.

Closing Date: 17th August 2026

As an employer we are committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and welcome applications from all sections of the community, regardless of an individual’s sex, age, religion, race, marital status, disability status, sexual orientation, maternity or care leaver status. We are committed to exploring opportunities for flexible working and ensuring the work-life balance and wellbeing of our workforce.

Please note that any job offer is subject to pre-employment checks including a DBS check, online searches and references from former employers, in line with guidance from the Department for Education.
