These roles involve working on public holidays excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year\’s Day. The role is Monday to Friday (39.5 hours)

This is a generic job which involves driving LGV vehicles, refuse vehicles to collect refuse from Businesses and households. You will help to identify and report problems about waste so that appropriate action can be taken to improve the service.

Your main responsibility will be to drive vehicles up to and including LGVs in compliance with legal obligations and expectations for driver behaviour.

You will work on your own or part of a team performing other cleansing duties or collecting refuse from households and businesses.

You will be flexible with regards to start times and may be required to start any time between 5am & 7am depending on requirements for the day.

You must ensure the correct use of lifting equipment and disposal arrangements. You will provide instructions to others on work practices, to comply with expected standards for performance and health and safety.

You will need to follow work schedules and interpret maps or management information to support collection schedule arrangements, for example, ensuring routes are followed or to consider if skips or bins are safe to be emptied.

You will check and maintain vehicles. You will need to complete records and use technologies such as in-cab to capture data, report variations or areas of concern. You will identify problems about waste, driving conditions or operational matters so that appropriate action can be taken.

In conjunction with Team Leaders, you will make variations to collection arrangements and the deployment of staff to support service delivery.

Ensuring a positive image is maintained with members of the public will be important. You will also undertake duties of a trade waste loader as required.

To undertake your role, you will receive support and be provided with appropriate training.

Requirements for the job:

  • Drive refuse vehicles in line with traffic regulations, the Highway Code and legislation for health and safety.
  • Assist in collecting waste, operating lifting equipment, removing, loading waste.
  • Assist in stickering and provision of information to the public on refuse collection arrangements.
  • Undertake driver checks, maintain and clean vehicles (as far as expected). Report any accidents, faults or repair needs promptly.
  • Ensure arrangements for security are followed.
  • Ensure driver records, time sheets and other information systems such as In-Cab are correctly maintained in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to the performance management of staff, including training, instruction and supervision, providing feedback and challenge where necessary.
  • Comply with procedures, risk assessment and Operator\’s guidance.
  • Ensure feedback is provided on issues regarding refuse collection arrangements and staff performance.
  • Work with other supervisors to support service delivery.
  • Effectively communicate on service delivery matters.

Subject to certain qualifying criteria, the Council may choose to support you through gaining your CPC driving qualifications.
