We are hiring an Engineering Manager for an established engineering design consultancy delivering civil, MEICA and multidisciplinary engineering across the UK utilities and water sector. We have a respected technical team and a strong pipeline of clean water, wastewater and infrastructure projects in Manchester. This role offers the opportunity to take a senior leadership position, guiding engineering strategy, shaping design delivery and driving excellence across a diverse portfolio of water-sector projects.
Salary: £75,000–£90,000 depending on experience and working arrangements
Working Model: Office-based with occasional site visits; hybrid
Role Overview: To lead and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team, act as the technical authority for the design function, and ensure engineering outputs meet required programme, safety, quality and integration standards. You will set direction, approve design packages, shape processes and ensure effective delivery across all design disciplines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and develop multidisciplinary engineers, CAD technicians and graduates
- Identify and implement safe, efficient, value-engineered design solutions and communicate them clearly
- Act as Professional Head for the design function across water projects
- Guide and approve design work, ensuring compliance with technical, professional and water company standards
- Identify and introduce appropriate software tools, promoting BIM and 3D modelling where beneficial
- Manage and integrate design deliverables to meet safety and quality requirements
- Review, interpret and brief technical standards, procedures and updates
- Maintain programme discipline and ensure deliverables are completed within agreed hours
- Oversee formal design processes and ensure project change is fully captured
- Lead estimating of design hours and support resourcing discussions
- Attend key meetings, provide senior technical input and represent the engineering function professionally
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- 10 years’ experience within the regulated water industry
- Graduate or HND in a relevant engineering discipline
- Chartered Engineer
- Strong IT capability and understanding of design software
- Proven experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and complex projects
- Understanding of MEICA, civil and process design principles
- Full driving licence and access to a vehicle
- Desire to take a leading strategic role within the engineering team
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
- Experience across clean water, wastewater and infrastructure schemes
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials and engineering drawing practices
