We are hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer – Water in Manchester. An established engineering design consultancy delivering civil, mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering design across the UK utilities and water sector. We have a strong and collaborative technical team based in Manchester, with a growing programme of clean water, wastewater, pumping and treatment projects. This role offers the opportunity to take responsibility for mechanical design delivery across a wide range of technically challenging schemes.

Initial Project Description

You will support a variety of mechanical design projects across the UK water industry, including UMON upgrade schemes at sewage treatment works, pumped storm storage at CSOs and treatment sites, and new-build pumping stations and wastewater treatment assets. Work will span outline, detailed and construction support phases, offering exposure to multidisciplinary design and delivery.

Role Overview

To produce high-quality mechanical engineering design deliverables for water-sector assets, ensuring outputs meet safety, quality, integration and technical requirements. You will prepare calculations, specifications and drawings while supporting the wider project team through coordination, technical reporting and supplier engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce mechanical design calculations, drawings and associated deliverables
  • Ensure outputs satisfy safety, quality and integration requirements
  • Direct, support and develop CAD technicians
  • Prepare scopes for and check deliverables from subcontract M&E design teams
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers; prepare specifications and review tenders
  • Prepare design investigations, reports and technical documentation
  • Ensure compliance with technical, professional and group standards
  • Implement and record design changes in line with project requirements
  • Estimate hours required for design packages and support programme planning
  • Attend meetings, design reviews and presentations, representing the mechanical discipline professionally

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • 10 years’ mechanical design experience in the UK water industry
  • Graduate, HND or significant experience from technician level
  • Good IT proficiency and familiarity with design tools
  • Registered with a professional body and working toward chartership
  • Strong communication, organisation and planning skills

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer
  • Experience in hydraulic design and UMON schemes
  • Experience with clean and wastewater, infra and non-infra designs
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials and engineering drawing practices
